Sheppard’s Bush Now Managed by Town

 Town Now Manages Sheppard’s Bush

As of January, 2022, the Town of Aurora has taken over the management of Sheppard’s Bush, a town jewel that was gifted to the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1971 and features 65 acres of natural parkland after having been previously managed by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority.
Sugar Shack and Log Cabin at Sheppard’s Bush

The area was donated to the foundation by Reg Sheppard whose father C.H. Sheppard was a former Mayor of Aurora and had driven a stagecoach between Aurora and Sutton. He had wanted Aurorans to enjoy the sugarbush in its natural state - partly why the area wasn’t directly gifted directly to the town as they wouldn’t guarantee him no gift taxes and succession duties, as well as the maximum income tax deduction. Reg also was weary of town councils that he thought may decide to try and develop parts over time.

It was also thought that the Aurora Horse Show would relocate on 20 acres there but that never materialized, and in 1975 the Conservation Authority announced a master plan which would include partially opening to the public in spring of 1976 with a sugar bush demonstration area, and construction of a sugar shack which hoped to produce 4,800 gallons of sap from 750 - 1000 maple trees, that would all translate into about 160 gallons of syrup to be sold from a historic log cabin that was relocated to the site.

The sugar bush dream was finally fully realized in 1977 when it was completely opened to the public, as the donating Sheppard family moved out of their on site home.

If you grew up in the area, you will recall your schools visiting, which was also part of the plan, attracting 15 - 20,000 visitors a year where you could sample the goodies and see the process involved in making maple syrup.
Lions Club donated the money to build pavilion

For many years after, the Aurora Lions Club would host an annual pancake breakfast there, and in fact, donated the funds to build an outdoor pavilion that is still at the park today, which can be booked out for events.

In 1997 the conservation authority proposed constructing soccer fields and baseball diamonds and an additional parking area that the town enjoys use of to this day as well. They have since added connecting walking trails that also allow access to the Nokida trail system which run all the way north to Holland Landing.

The town of Aurora owes a debt of gratitude to Reg Sheppard for this wondrous donation and one can only hope they consider bringing back the operation of the sugar shack and once again offering Aurora’s own maple syrup!

York Region Forests Map Developed Trails

Spotted at Jokers Hill, King Township
Summer seems finally within grasp and with that this year were being told to expect higher than usual numbers of mosquitoes and black flies and something else - ticks they say are also more plentiful this year and as spreaders of Lyme disease something we surely want to avoid.

As a person who loves the outdoors and is prone to venturing off beaten paths at times to capture wild life and nature photos if not cleared them of fallen trees, I've come up with a few rules I use to make my outdoor experience less annoying (nothing more annoying than batting off mosquitoes as you try and hold for a shot) and ultimately more safe. Ditto thought to batting bugs while using a chain saw.

Before anything else, I douse myself in bug repellent, ensuring to cover areas like my head, face and susceptible spots like above the waistline and ankles and if I'm working outdoors or around swarms of bugs when further north ensuring to close my eyes when spraying my face and keeping cameras and sunglasses out of spray shot so as not to damage them, I might even wear a cheap dollar store type of overalls with hood as well as gloves which leave only your face at risk, but, barring all that, wearing long sleeved shirts or jackets with hood  and long pants is best to avoid unpleasantries. Shoes and socks over bare feet or sandals are recommended as well.

While out in nature, just remember that any new nearby land development - maybe even your home - will shakes out a few casualties or displaced wild life looking for new territory so be on the look out while driving and on the trails, and be sure to respect their habitat.

Residence near Bathurst St. Newmarket
It's usually best to stick to the marked trails if you want to avoid black legged ticks and if you have dogs and allow them to run free, please don't if you want to avoid ticks and especially don't during June's nesting season, as free-for-all-running dogs often uproot ground nests or spook wild life out resulting in lost wild life and habitat.

Just respect nature and nature will respect you! And remember doggy poop bags do no good lying on the ground, plastic does not decompose, and neither do Timmies cups! Enjoy it...just don't destroy it!

Aurora Silent Auction a Reminder of Past and Future

" Trees Removed on Keele St 1969" - This historical piece made available for silent auction
It slipped my memory that Artist Dorothy Clark Mclure had passed in 2012, known throughout York Region for her paintings mostly, often capturing old buildings just prior to their demolition. Or trees, as in the case of this original sepia drawing which will go into silent auction in the evening hours on Sat Feb 25 from Aw Shucks Seafood Bar & Grill in Aurora.

So you can imagine my horror when I was arranging to pick up the artwork and realized I'd asked the person on the phone if they were Dorothy! It's hard to imagine a world without the local art and issues icon I grew up knowing of and admiring. But maybe we won't ever completely be - through her art!

More than Artist

But Ms. Mclure was much more than just an esteemed York Region Artist - she actually started out painting the Muskoka's - but a celebrated Aurora citizen who cared about her community and its history in addition to telling us so through her beautiful art, having served as head of the Aurora Historical Society, among distinguished positions held and honours bestowed upon, Dorothy in life, as well as Aurora's 2007 citizen of the year. She is and was a cherished Aurora and York Region icon that will live long beyond her years on earth through her beautiful works of art and particularly those capturing our history! And it was through inspiring examples like Dorothy Clark Mclure, that inspired young local girls, become young ladies to follow their passion and art forms.

Environment Minister in Aurora Ontario

Ontario Environment Minister Glen Murray takes questions in Aurora
When I first saw the Facebook posting that someone had some extra free tickets to a special theatre viewing of the documentary by Leonardo Dicaprio, Before The Flood, my first instinct was as a filmmaker, wondering how Dicaprio would be at making a documentary - being an award winning documentary Producer / Director myself. No Academy Awards winner perhaps, such as Leo has won, but nevertheless I was more curious about the crossover genre and how he'd be than the subject matter, truth be known. And he was okay as host, but it was the material covered that was the biggest shocker for me.

Not that I didn't know about "global warming" and "climate change", of course I did, but I never really gave it enough of a look and thought before in order to realize how critical the issue was. And a lot of that has to do with the past corporate push-back against the science I believe, which is now indisputable.

The film takes us on a journey across the earth into different regions - remote tar sands in Canada, sea side locations and the furthest reaches of the north pole where we are shown how much ice layer has melted now in just so many years, and learn that because the grey and dark ground underneath cannot reflect light back as it once did the area continues to warm.

It awakened me to the urgency of the need for the world to act, and that there are measurable ways to which the problem can be addressed, but it has to be now or so or else there is simply no way to stop it. It is that serious. I believe corporate crafted science bashing played some role in that for a spell, perhaps leaving enough of a seed of doubt to keep me from being concerned but those days are gone now.

We learn from the outset, that Dicaprio had been made a world ambassador to the U.N., and he gets an opportunity to address them, so his final scenes speech is shown after he's visited all these areas and zones across the world, while meeting with locals and scientists, to give us a full picture of what is happening globally due to greenhouse gases. We also learned about how the "false springs'. due to wild weather patterns. are affecting everything from flowers to crops, and how the U.S. only uses 5% of its farming land for food, while most is beef. And which cows emit Co2 through burping. Choosing anything other than beef to eat was one way to help reduce emissions we are told. Wow. who moo? Er,..I mean, who knew? Or that palm oil, because they clear millions of acres of trees and vegetation to grow it, is destroying our environment. Don't use palm oil.

Dicaprio points out that the Paris Accord is / was only a voluntary agreement in which the participating countries agreed to lower their carbon emissions levels. Still, there is room for optimism the movie points out, as even China has agreed to reductions for the first time, facing increasing pressure from citizens in regards to it. In China it is the one protest issue they unite around because it is severely affecting the health of many now as some areas are almost unlivable because of it.

While the glaciers and caps melt, and floods and extreme weather fluctuations increase, it is the small, poorer island nations that will first begin seeking other places to live, They showed sea-side communities that already are no longer livable.because of climate change and others wiped out by record droughts. But what happens when there is no where else to move? It is that critical.

There was one bright spot in the documentary which was one of the last guests he interviews and who himself is dying of cancer but optimistic man can reverse course before its too late.

" We're well on our way towards 4 degrees increase and most scientists agree that if we get beyond 4 degrees shift we may not be EVER able to reverse it. adding " But I believe we can do it and am going to spend the rest of my life working towards that end" Climate Change Scientist. - see film clip.

At the end, attendees got a chance to ask special guest speaker and Ontario Minister of the Environment, Glen Murray who dropped in at the behest of local M.P.P. and Ontario Minister of Housing, Chris Ballard, of which you can listen to some of Minister Murray's insights from the evening by clicking here.

I do buy that global warming is a very critical issue that needs acting upon now, however I don't necessarily buy all the terms we are fed like " sustainable development" that come straight from the United Nations' 2021 and 2030 plans, which even an attending person from the Oak Ridges Moraine fight group mentioned the fact we are not going to reach 2021 goals, but she was not referring to the 2021 U.N. plan but another Ontario pledged goal date - not knowing they are connected. That is what I find scary, is residents and politicians alike quoting sustainable this and that BUT NOT EVEN KNOWING ITS ORIGINS. Don't you think they should?know its origins?

In fact, I find most politicians don't either seem aware or are told not to connect the dots, but all of our smart growth plans, sustainable housing and transportation, intensification, development even refugee resettlement camps and how we'll share our food with and who gets subsidies are all in the 2030 UN plan - and we are on its timetable, And that is where they lose me, because although I certainly agree we need to act, we need to act in Canada's best interests as well, not just the UN's, and that should not mean restrictions to where we choose to live or what we want to drive (cars) or how - unless made affordable for EVERYONE driving now.

I believe the only way this plan to push people into specific intensified areas with little or possibly no access to some designated green areas is what is coming down the pipes using climate change as its vehicle to govern it into place. This is my concern. And as an example one of the plans the Ontario government has out now offers $14,000 back if you buy a $28,000 green car. Most people I know are struggling just to keep their existing cars on the road let alone afford a new green mobile and so what of them in these plans? Transit they quietly mutter. Well, no.

The slow push towards also restricting where we can go freely in the name of whats "best' for everyone, as well as the accompanying video surveillance everywhere we go, for everyone's "safety" are other Big Brother-like concerns I have in regards to their plans.

It's like the fake news does - mix some real facts with some not so true facts to get you to arrive at a conclusion or support a system. Fact is, the end result sought by the originators of the plan is a world governed from the U.N., and rolled out based on their timetables which do not match ours. As well once international laws begin to supersede our own through some of the multi-national companies we now allow - say a dispute about buying our water - and other international courts like Human Rights Tribunals, then these international courts could over rule our own domestic laws as being unlawful -  in our own country!

All I know is the U.N. for all its good, actually prefers dictatorship types of government or communism, like China has, because of the long term stability in executing a world plan - such as the new direction in policy we may begin to see now in the U.S. with Donald Trump now at the helm that could put a dent in their plan - which in turn affects ours - all because we're on others' planned timetables and NOT OUR OWN. Do we wait for the next U.S. election or direction now? No, we need our own realistic sustainable plan.

Tom Pearson with homeless YR Farmer Sam Orrico
Yes we need start changing our ways and yesterday otherwise we risk losing the entire earth! But all I'm saying is we need to take the information from sources like this excellently rolled out flick and heed its advise to get going on our own local timetables that fits each community's's needs schedule, otherwise our own locals suffer whilst we waste millions upon millions of dollars building and running empty buses before we need them whilst we have Canadian men living in the streets in winter - whilst we say we cant afford to house them. There ain't no immediate global warming plan for them in these UN made directives. The attending Minister of Housing Ballard should perhaps take notes on that and hatch a plan on their behalf.

Best Female Vocalist and a new 17 year old Phenom @ Aurora Winter Blues Festival

Angel Forrest rocks the house in Aurora
Sat. Jan 21, 2017 I got a chance to check out Angel Forrest performing in Aurora, Ontario, Canada, as part of an opening to the 2017 Aurora winter Blues Festival, using a pop-up style location, like being utilized during the 2017 edition of the A.W.B. Festival, with the next pop-up location being Feb 4 at Highlands automotive showroom dealership showroom on Yonge St. Aurora, featuring  The All Star Band! Logistics over the years, combined with a lack of area venues and associated costs have evolved the crown jewel area event, which attracts top talent to perform as well as visitors in winter, to use a unique pop-up style venue via the staging services of Rent A Stage  - which also provides sound, lighting, and back-lighting services.

I witnessed my first taste of the venue style on Sta Jan 21 2017with Montreal based, Angel Forrest, who was headlining the bill with the Cara Lea Band, and boy was she phenomenal ,with vocal range and energy that inspired the players it seemed to even higher highs. All seemed in synch and the sound setup for the venue was excellent with little if any reverb and being set inside a warehouse just gave it all the more a cool vibe to it. Re-mindful of shows from back in the day...dare I say.

But Angel was the main cause for excitement on this night , leaving nothing out there , owning and feeling every song with conviction and no add-on walk-throughs. If she sang it, it was no throw in.
And she belted every note, raspy and non while holding nothing back theatrically, from dancing to dramatic head toss-backs, to costume shedding changes, Forrest never missed a beat.

View part of the the performance here.

Certainly Angel showed she was every bit worthy of winning  2017's Top Female Vocalist one night later at the Maple Blues Awards, as well as winning, alongside Denis Coulombe, for best Songwriter and Producer / recording, for Angel Forrest II.

Also having a great night at the M.B.A.'s was Paul Deslauriers Band with Blues-rock guitarist Paul winning both Entertainer and Electric Act of the Year while bass player Greg Morency was best bass and Sam Harrison drummer was picked best drummer.

I can tell you I witnessed Paul Deslauriers Band in 2015 when they performed at the Aurora Winter Blues Festival and were just remarkable. I have footage of that as well as Paul playing with the A.W.B.F.'s All Stars Jam Band.  What a pheenom!

One other notable from Jan 22nd's Maple Blues Awards that will effect locally, as far as draw power goes, is the pick for the Best New Artist was Fort Erie's 17 year old wunderkid Guitarist, Spencer Mackenzie who plays on the card with Downchild Blues Band on Feb 24 @ St Andrews College Theatre. Aurora Street Festival a Zoo

Well kangaroo poo hit the fan recently when a social media - Facebook -  uproar was raised about the condition of a kangaroo at the well attended street fest held in Aurora, Ontario, Canada this past Sunday. The irate complainant(?)s was angry that the animal was being kept in hot conditions, so hot it was panting (for water) continuously. Others said there was no shaded area.

No complaints about the pig's treatment though.
The same attraction, brought in by a private Yonge St. business, which has done so for the past 7 years without incident,  has now instantly maligned and labelled the operators of the traveling petting zoo as downright bad-ass. To say the social media blasts were vicious would be an understatement - someone even contacting City TV to have them outed.

The Town of Aurora establishment reacted swiftly, distancing themselves by announcing that although they did not hire the company, they have informed the petting zoo that they will no longer be welcome. Now let's bare in mind this same zoo has been participating here, including I believe pony rides, without any prior incidents one would suppose, but now, after one ALLEGED infraction, they are being publicly axed?

Whimsical Wind Chimes
Well wait a minute, did I just say alleged? Surely the conditions the kangaroo was subjected to speak for itself...the poor thing, suffering so much it had to resort to panting and licking its own perspiration even!

" Just keep quiet",

I was told by one woman on Facebook, for mentioning we're ok with pony rides. She of course, having added my name for effect so it highlighted who I was and outed me to everyone as a potential animal abuser too for having this bad OPINION that everyone should hate. But did anyone research it at all? Surely some must have been curious as to how such creatures - that come from much hotter climates than here- survive living in deserts and the like. Surely someone checked.

Well, as it turns out, kangaroos (marsupials) have a unique, complex setup up for surviving extreme temperatures, and, in fact, use superficial vessels in their forelegs for licking, as well as panting, as a normal behaviour for survival of hot conditions. In other words, what likely looked like a panting, suffering animal, was likely just going through its normal, natural, internal temperature control motions....Ooops!

Some people are against any and all kinds of zoos and that is fine, but Zookeepers will also tell you as well there are benefits for getting to know wild animals that happen to be in captivity, for both, as the more we learn, the more we can adapt and sometimes make changes that help to preserve them. We do have laws that govern care of exotic animals and petting zoos and I'm sure, as this was not the first event its been in,  that the conditions were already known.
Anyone check those chickens?..They may not be rubber!

In fact four types of kangaroos are considered extinct now with yet several others teetering on the brink. Yea, PUTS A WHOLE NEW PERSPECTIVE ON IT NOW DOESN'T IT.

Get out & enjoy summer & offer your opinion where you see fit but always remember, sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious. So before we ruin people's livelihoods to appease our pet peeves, let's be sure.

See Yourk News and Events' highlights video of the festival here!

Until Next time. And Please don't text us and drive!
