York, GTA Festival's take a Car Wash

Area Car Shows may be affected
With summer in full swing the only thing holding everyone back from planning anything substantial outdoors is the crazy weather we've had, particularly in a "double El Nino year" whatever that means.
The amount of precipitation thus far since spring really has been astronomical in relative terms with no end in sight at least through Canada Day which this year is celebrating 150 years. Traditionally and statistically we actually get hit with rain quite frequently on this day but we have to hope crazy wind flare ups don't hinder things either.

                                                       Car wash anyone?

It's already affected the town of Newmarket's celebration early as flooded parkland and trail ways have rendered the usual location unsafe forcing the town to announce a new location this year at nearby Riverwalk Commons with events getting underway with the Lions Hall pancake breakfast still on schedule for a 7a.m. indoor start.

I recall a few years earlier when a sudden storm caused tables and chairs to overturn there while Jazz + music festival attendees scurried indoors as best they could to escape the torrential onslaught. Already this year it rained or threatened to throughout the town of Aurora's annual street festival likely affecting sales and attendance. Car show's too have had to cancel some major events already.

Recent in-Doors cover band
Now if you're an event organizer, vendor, promoter or band / crew member that relies on outdoor gigs to survive, it can wreak havoc on you as well, as witnessed by a recent washed out weekend long slated music festival that cancelled the rest of the show on the Saturday afternoon stiffing all the bands while doing so as well.
Not The Who I want to see. Nice though. Who, who, who who.

That event was doubly marred by the fact that it was charging a cover for the first time, combined with the torrential stormy weather, that sunk their ship and by the sounds of it the promoters were very much relying on that revenue to pay anyone. Wouldn't have been so bad if they'd explained it to the bands, like Elton Ron, that they had no $ but instead slunk away out of sight leaving a fuming wake in their / his dust and not returning calls or texts.

Maybe take up watching horse races
In Toronto, Ontario Place's Budweiser Stage is facing unprecedented flooding cancelling the first ever shows in the newly renovated spot hosting concerts for some big name acts....One wonders if this keeps up if outdoor shows become less and less common with simply too much money potentially being lost on so many levels. Insurance companies will increasingly be on the hook and with that a rise in ticket prices as well passed down to the little guy, you.Maybe places like the long running Cadillac lounge which recently announced it would be closing should hold out for awhile to cash in on a possible indoor insurgence.

Properties face unprecedented flood water
Perhaps the new today needs to involve having a Plan B just in case the extreme weather fluctuations don't cooperate. Give us all a chance to do more home chores, after the storm nature walks, and indoor venue hopping. Let's just hope it doesn't progress to the point where Plan B becomes the new Plan A. That would blow.

We'd have more time to feed chipmunks
Meantime, should you opt for a country or city drive, here's the listing links to the all G.T.A. Canada Day events in Ontario!

Best Female Vocalist and a new 17 year old Phenom @ Aurora Winter Blues Festival

Angel Forrest rocks the house in Aurora
Sat. Jan 21, 2017 I got a chance to check out Angel Forrest performing in Aurora, Ontario, Canada, as part of an opening to the 2017 Aurora winter Blues Festival, using a pop-up style location, like being utilized during the 2017 edition of the A.W.B. Festival, with the next pop-up location being Feb 4 at Highlands automotive showroom dealership showroom on Yonge St. Aurora, featuring  The All Star Band! Logistics over the years, combined with a lack of area venues and associated costs have evolved the crown jewel area event, which attracts top talent to perform as well as visitors in winter, to use a unique pop-up style venue via the staging services of Rent A Stage  - which also provides sound, lighting, and back-lighting services.

I witnessed my first taste of the venue style on Sta Jan 21 2017with Montreal based, Angel Forrest, who was headlining the bill with the Cara Lea Band, and boy was she phenomenal ,with vocal range and energy that inspired the players it seemed to even higher highs. All seemed in synch and the sound setup for the venue was excellent with little if any reverb and being set inside a warehouse just gave it all the more a cool vibe to it. Re-mindful of shows from back in the day...dare I say.

But Angel was the main cause for excitement on this night , leaving nothing out there , owning and feeling every song with conviction and no add-on walk-throughs. If she sang it, it was no throw in.
And she belted every note, raspy and non while holding nothing back theatrically, from dancing to dramatic head toss-backs, to costume shedding changes, Forrest never missed a beat.

View part of the the performance here.

Certainly Angel showed she was every bit worthy of winning  2017's Top Female Vocalist one night later at the Maple Blues Awards, as well as winning, alongside Denis Coulombe, for best Songwriter and Producer / recording, for Angel Forrest II.

Also having a great night at the M.B.A.'s was Paul Deslauriers Band with Blues-rock guitarist Paul winning both Entertainer and Electric Act of the Year while bass player Greg Morency was best bass and Sam Harrison drummer was picked best drummer.

I can tell you I witnessed Paul Deslauriers Band in 2015 when they performed at the Aurora Winter Blues Festival and were just remarkable. I have footage of that as well as Paul playing with the A.W.B.F.'s All Stars Jam Band.  What a pheenom!

2017 Aurora Festival Line up includes

One other notable from Jan 22nd's Maple Blues Awards that will effect locally, as far as draw power goes, is the pick for the Best New Artist was Fort Erie's 17 year old wunderkid Guitarist, Spencer Mackenzie who plays on the card with Downchild Blues Band on Feb 24 @ St Andrews College Theatre. Live Entertainment Venues drop like the Celebs of 2016

Aurora Winter Blues Festival All Star performers 2015 Sean Pinchin, Conor Gains, Paul Deslauriers
Are smaller live entertainment venues going by way of the dinosaur? It seems possible, based on the closures of so many G.T.A. live venues. Mainstays like Hugh's Room and even the El Mocambo, once untouchable, and where the Rolling Stones once played unannounced, are throwing in the towels it would seem and of course flagship never-a-cover, Gasworks, is long gone, as is Club Blue Note. Even Toronto's Hard Rock Cafe doesn't host live bands anymore while longtime venues like Yorkville's The Pilot and TO's The Silver Dollar are still around but are they thriving enough to resist the condo brigade from moving in on them too eventually?

Today's youth often embrace Hip Hop's Electro beats
A recent visit to another longtime Toronto live act venue, The Birchmount Tavern, saw a sparse crowd to take in often really good rockin' talent for no cover. If this is the support these performers are getting regularly it could be a death knell there as well. I do know a longtime sound and lighting guy is no longer an in-house luxury there, perhaps the first casualty of their live rock and roll war. Click here to check out TPE's video visit.
TP with Paul Deslauriers Band Video footage here

The owners of Toronto live act venue The Rock Pile - 2 locations - know the haydays of live bands, along with throngs of attendees, are gone, yet continue to run their venues anyway and you have to respect that. The former owners of the infamous 3 floor bar at Queens St W, The Big Bop, are theme oriented too and so a cool spot, with a good stage and plenty of seating for a show - but again, much of the onus is on the promoters to bring people in, as there is not a regular bar crowd per say. Each show being an independent one put on by the acts. Click here to check out TPE's visit to The Rock Pile.

El NO Mo'cambo
Even in smaller towns that once sported live entertainment in almost every venue, it's getting harder to find bars featuring live acts, and certainly beyond just having just locals play. Even the venue operators these days seem to leave all the promo work to the bands, acts, and promoters making it even harder to get people out or aware. Often the venue will also "pay" you the door - that you have to man to collect - and perhaps a cut of sales which never seem to add up to much.

On New Year's Eve the event we promoted offered great, live ambient entertainment during dinner & later a DJ, a 5 course meal, bar inclusive at $75, and it was still tough to get people out! It certainly would have been both cheaper and easier using "canned" music but some appreciate live, and it's they who the eve was targeted. Click here to check out great live ambience highlights from New Year's.

Imagine no live music....
Sure, we have internet means and Face Book to get the word out nowadays - but they don't always transform people from their seats at home to seats in the establishments. And these days they can get some video footage often from a show or event they are missing or missed.

That said, perhaps there are ways we can better use technology to entice bar and event / venue operators, to want to accommodate live music by perhaps additionally selling on-line live streaming to live shows using stationary in-house video cameras. Do it right, and this could be extra revenue streaming in potentially from around the world. They can set it up or promoters can and give them a cut, whatever works best in each case. Make it simple to tune in @ $5 a pop or monthly fees for unlimited live shows viewing. TPE currently records performances for perhaps future use or viewing on one of our on-line shows like I Really Am Tom, but I believe revenue from "attendees" not present could go a long way to supporting acts / venues to stay operating in the future.

Upcoming Not-To-be-Missed Live Events

Thursday Night Jams at Birchmount Tavern, Scarborough

Upcoming, there are a few live venue shows in the G.T.A. that I'm looking forward to, one being at the Horseshoe Tavern on Wed Feb 22, 2017 with The Marcus King Band featuring US guitar wunderkind Marcus King and the other being The Sixth Annual Aurora Winter Blues Festival, just north of the city along Yonge St., and running Feb 4, 24 ( Legendary Downchild Blues Band) & 25th 2017.... And keep checking in with TPE as we have some live shows in the works and live shows to announce and the Great Valentines Day give-away. TPE video clip AWB Festival past.

Main St Canada

Town's Under Siege? Each has it's own unique make-up to satisfy....and locals to satisfy.
Maintaining a functioning town's Main Street is a dilemma that is featured across small town Canada, heck even small town USA. It's not unique to have an issue with Main St's being that they are expected to reflect the culture of a town and by extension its town folk while also remaining functional, able to do enough business to continue existing.

Main St USA, Newmarket!... during filming of Regression
By leaving it up to fate, sometimes you end up with too many restaurants or coffee shops, and the ones with the best deal or product or deepest pockets survive, but that's not a way to create a good, functioning Main St. You should have a plan. And you should know a number of variables - foremost of which would be adding, shops, restaurants and events that attract business and feed each other - not off each other. What I would do would be to compile a wish list of best case scenario tenants for a Main St. coming off a master wish list designed to enhance the street.
Movie filmed on Main

To Newmarket's credit they've already done a study and produced a detailed town / downtown action plan that pretty much mirrors what I've mentioned thus far, but in the end, leaves no conduit that leads to those changes.

The 72 page 2013 released action plan mentions 4 main pillars people fell into for going to the downtown core which included,

Unionville converted fire hall
Special Events or Festivals on Main, Restaurants on Main, The Farmer's Market, History charm and architecture.

Notably still missing on Main in 2015 - arts and culture, a mentioned desired space taker according to the action plan, not to mention people don't list it tops as a destination to actually SHOP!

Recently I had a good look at the Town of Unionville's set up, attending on a Thursday evening where the patios, shops and street were packed with people. Of course they have a different dynamic than, say, Main St Newmarket, with Unionville having a much wider road and sidewalks areas to work with allowing for more patio frontage, and adorning both sides of the street in stretches.

Use mural art to spruce and add culture
The night I attended, they also had their "band in the park" event,a very high end Beatles clone band who could also be heard from nearby patios adding to the ambiance, as they have a Gazebo style stage right on their Main St..

After the concert, and presumably before, people would swarm through town along Main, parking, often strategically taking people along it as well increasing the ease and opportunity for business to occur. Live bands or piped music could be heard starting up in some pubs and establishments alongside the murmur of chatter from the abundance of patios and street walkers. The restaurants, shops and patios were bustling with people, but, like any Main St, they too had a few gaps yet to be filled.

Orillia Main St
Improving the mix and composition of Main St Newmarket was deemed critical to the future success  according to the plan, a job for captain obvious, but how to get er done!?. I'd mentioned a wish list of desired prospective tenants earlier and lo and behold this very report may indeed have already done that! Cool!

So what types of establishments do we need? According to the plan and one of it's committee members, Nancy Bernard, not " too many restaurants", as Unionville apparently had too many in 2012, but they still have many more with patios than we do now, and on both sides of the road, which we do not!

Ladies and gentlemen..The Beatles!Unionville Main St. Gazebo stage
All things being equal though, we're not the same, thus why every Main St has its own unique challenges. For example after an event at Riverwalk Commons, nothing pulls people naturally along Main St like Unionville's does, and nor is there a stage right on Main in Newmarket, unless for a rare special event or festival.

Made in Newmarket - new patios on Main
Brand identity is another mentioned and I've long maintained we should market Newmarket as Canada's Main St, with movie productions shot here listed as well as local landmarks and postcards, Newmarket shirts, Main St T's, Mugs etc could support that branding. The feature film Regression for example coming out in theatres was shot right on Main, as were many others - that's marketable stuff to outsiders not from here, but they need to be informed. Behind the scenes filmimg video. Other recent productions shot on Main St Newmarket was 2011 thriller Dream House.

Another new Main St Newmarket restaurant
Another point the study makes - attract the public to Main St. following the farmer's market - but again, no plan. One could always move the market right onto Main St. which has been done here successfully, or hold simultaneous events with vendors while the farmers market is on.... or what else could be done is an information flyer advertising various specials and attractions about Main St. and made available via a booth at the farmers market and / or any festivals held at nearby Riverwalk Commons. Include a coupon discount type design into it and encourage people to visit Main.

But once they arrive on Main, and they get beyond the beauty and the restaurants, we want to turn that leisurely stroll into higher numbers of strolls and ultimately sales, by adding more interesting shops / attractions.

Main St Unionville on a Thursday
One main obstacle is parking, an ongoing issue which could be resolved through several means. One Councilor suggested knocking down a 50's era fire house to accomplish more parking while I prefer a new spanking patio there, where none exist on the west side..a gap that needs filling but not with a parking lot.

The tennis club seems to me the best spot for new parking and logical being its located adjacent to existing parking. Moving the club to , say , the property on Davis Drive already a community centre already, that the town spoke about selling, would allow for a move without having to change the official development plan for the area. No variance would then need be applied for resulting in the quickest route to new parking.

Newmarket specialty stores at Main
Existing events on Main need support and as well nearby ones need include them as much as possible including the Jazz+ Festival which should have events coinciding with Main St as part of the festival and perhaps include it on Main for a portion of it. There was not enough spill over business in 2015 from my observations and so an area that can really be improved still!

Still, if one's honest, one can say we are lacking somewhat on Main regardless and do have some gaps to fill but with what?
Cool style shops in Newmarket's Main St and various services
One area of concern is the old post office that used to house seniors but now site empty, the owners hoping for approval for condominiums, a plan for which was rejected. Since that ruling, the owners who also own the adjoining row of buildings that housed stores and residents vacated them, the properties now boarded up and an eyesore. At some point this will have to be revisited again, but one would think some sort of tenants will be an end result which would serve to help support Main as well. The city of Hamilton has made it law that old buildings such as churches must keep the outer structure intact and designs that wrap around keeping them.
Ultimately Newmarket's clock tower will need something doing to appease the parties involved, including the towns folk, and keeping part will certainly have to be in the design mix.

Made to move out in Newmarket
Two things the study mentions in relation to restaurants were to do with cashing in on grants for using local vegetables. I say great, but whatever happened to actual stores selling fresh fruit and produce and flowers etc. In the old days you'd see them in abundance and today not so much - but China town is ripe full of such places and we could be following the directive goal of including culture two ways here!

Canada Day Newmarket 2015 Video
In Orillia I saw a General Store that started up in 2015, and believe it or not it's an idea I've mentioned previously for Newmarket's Main - should it includes hardware supplies, keys cut, unique souvineers, minor groceries and maybe even photocopying for the modern version, it might fly.

Orillia even has an entire store dedicated to music and art mostly from the Beatles era called AlleyCats as well as a guitar / music store! Mind you they have had a Beatles festival going there for the past 8 years competing with semi-nearby Collingwood and their Elvis fest.

A Beatles Festival would fit the definition of bringing a diversity of people across all nationalities, as the Beatles were a world-wide phenomenon, not to mention the British roots, from whence Newmarket got her name. They would also cover many marketing demographics including all age groups and Main st lends itself naturally to the era. Hmmm..Beatle Mainia! Lol.

WISH LIST

In addition to an increase in events on Main, my wish list may include;

A Music Store and place to develop talent / lessons / workshops would definitely suit both the needs of the street to add character, but also functionally, and is one of the directives sought out tenant types.

Old and Rare Records store....alongside our famous comic books author on Main  a records shop with retro and nostalgic trade-ables would also be cool. Some may not know this but we had one for a short time and it was beginning to look good when they had to leave.

Condo Convert to be in Hamilton
Convenience Grocery Store - the old days saw typical Main St's with stores selling fresh fruits and vegetables and certainly there is room for that on Main for the right vendor, possibly representing the Asian community or Italian or Mexican and include some products unique to their culture - again covers the plan's directives.

Newmarket could use this
Art Gallery(s) / Arts Centre / Independant Artists - showings, sales, lessons.

Visual Arts Centre - including photography and film / video

Aboriginal themed shop - Art, crafts sales, native drumming / circles / workshops

Antiques - convince someone to relocate to the Main S

Grocery Store - once condos are built nearby in the future it could be sustained.

Hamilton - Rock-T's
West Side - Restaurant / Confectionary / Patio - West side of main part of Main St south has the only natural spaces for a street side patio of size..Either where the fire hall is, post office, or existing Brad Jone's Karate, are the only spots wide enough to accommodate such a move however.
A converted fire hall works in Unionville.

True Cyber Cafe - offering free connection for patrons and chat spaces. Make it Cool and unique w music.

Shishi Bar - popular, cultural - maybe too early in Newmarket for this.

Transform an existing business to include an Asian style karaoke / sushi / dim sum bar

Cool Retro or Collectibles

Goodwill re-use / sale type store

Condo's / low rise apartments convert

For sale... one town clock and  4 store units!
To pursue these types of businesses is one thing, but to convince someone to do a startup or move an existing business there from another location may not be so easy - so I propose offering an incentive to those businesses on a wish list via grants / rent rebates for the 1st year or two to get established. Then they'll be able to proactively seek them out and fill up Main st Newmarket with new and interesting businesses and have the parking to support it!

Newmarket Aurora Home Shows Full Bloom

The appearance of Home & Garden Shows always signal the coming of spring and having attended both the Aurora and Newmarket Home Shows this year, I can say they haven't changed much. You still arrive and are handed bags to collect cool stuff in and the floor areas are chock full of vendor booths, most connected to home & gardening somehow. Considerably less fridge magnets though these days. Lol.

It's always fun though as you inherently run into people you haven't seen in awhile either attending or at a booth and so it has a social element to the 'tradition" as well. One thing that has stretched over the years is home show vendor themes, such as politicians and transit info at the shows.

This year I ran into the Aurora / Newmarket MPP Chris Ballard at The Newmarket Show where he didn't have a booth, but missed him in Aurora where he did. MP Lois Brown was off checking out bamboo pillows or cases or something when I popped by her Aurora booth and she also had one at the Newmarket show. I guess the feds have bigger budgets for party promotion.

Contests enthusiasts and especially those who are "die-hards", enjoy the 'fill out ballot & win something" contests, and know the best odds of winning something are those with manual fill outs. I always fill them out.

When I was a kid, I attended with my Mom, Mabel Pearson, who was also The Aurora Shopping Centre's Promotions Coordinator at that time prior to being Mcdonalds' Restaurants' area Promotions Coordinator, a position owner Peter Miller created for her in order to hire her, as had the ASC, after some years of her prize winning parade floats while working at Renz Cleaners, and she'd filled out a contest ballot to name a new plaza in Newmarket. Mom filled out two actually, one in Dad's name, who sheepishly accepted the $250 prize with his pic in the paper as the winning plaza name entry, The Quaker Hill Market Place. There was one entry per person you see, so mom entered dad's name. Ha! It remains so named today! Lol. That would be the closest my parents ever came to dishonesty. Mom, who also taught art classes at the Aurora community Centre and helped start Aurora's first Art shows, was renowned for her hand- drawn ads, designing everything herself by drawing it out first, whether it be a float or an ad or a flyer. there were no computer graphics like today then! Mom's Canada Day Parade floats and costumes were multiple yaer prize winners and us kids all got the brunt of her ideas, my brother once being dressed as Canada's Birthday cake, my old bass drum, confiscated for its base. That was her way of creative daycare. Ha. with 5 kids to also watch!

At any rate, both shows did indeed offer some unique booths and interesting information and is a tradition I'm not soon to give up. Hey, maybe I'll win that 1/4 page add from the Aurora Banner!? They can make up for the years I spent delivering, canvassing them and collecting! For a pittance in "those days!"...God! I'm sounding old! Better add an LOL.

Now get outside and Play!

Aurora Home Show Video - Highlights include Karate, Home & Garden, Maple Syrup!
Newmarket Home Show Video  - Highlights include Robotics and Solar Power.

Enjoy YOURK Day!
